Service 2 successfully completed a sophisticated HVAC system upgrade at Bluewater Shopping Centre, one of the UK’s premier retail destinations. This project involved converting existing air handling units to modern DX (direct expansion) technology, enhancing energy efficiency and operational reliability while maintaining optimal climate conditions for this high-footfall retail environment.
Challenge
The shopping centre faced several technical challenges with their existing HVAC infrastructure:
• Outdated gas-powered air handling system with increasing maintenance requirements
• Need to transition to more efficient and environmentally friendly cooling technology
• Complex rooftop installation requirements in an active retail environment
• Strict operational constraints to maintain shopping centre climate control during works
• Limited access windows to minimise disruption to retailers and shoppers
• Requirement for safe decommissioning of existing gas and refrigeration systems
Solution
Our team implemented a comprehensive solution to modernise the air handling units:
• Conducted detailed site surveys and developed a phased implementation strategy
• Safely decommissioned and removed existing gas connections to air handling units
• Professionally degassed and removed outdated refrigeration pipework in accordance with F-Gas regulations
• Installed new Daikin DX cooling coils on the rooftop location with specialist lifting equipment
• Implemented new DX pipework systems connecting to external condensers
• Conducted pressure testing and leak detection on all new refrigeration circuits
• Completed full system commissioning and operational testing to manufacturer specifications
• Provided detailed handover documentation and operational training
