Airy Hill Primary School: Hybrid Heating System Installation & Plant Room Modernisation

Project Overview

Service 2 successfully completed a comprehensive heating system transformation at Airy Hill Primary School, implementing an innovative hybrid solution combining traditional gas boilers with renewable heat pump technology. This forward-thinking project delivered a complete plant room overhaul, significantly enhancing energy efficiency while ensuring reliable heating for the educational environment.

Challenge

The primary school faced several critical heating infrastructure challenges:

Ageing and inefficient heating system struggling to maintain comfortable learning environments

Rising energy costs impacting the school’s operational budget

Requirement for system resilience to ensure consistent heating throughout the academic year

Limited disruption window during school holiday periods

                Need for a future-proofed solution

Solution

Our team designed and implemented a comprehensive hybrid heating solution:

Installed two high-efficiency Vaillant ecoTEC gas boilers to provide reliable base heating capacity

Integrated four Vaillant aroTHERM Plus air source heat pumps to deliver renewable heating

Completed full plant room reconstruction including new pipework, pumps and headers

Implemented advanced control systems to optimise the hybrid operation between heat pumps and boilers

Installed new heat emitters where required to maximise heat pump efficiency

Implemented comprehensive system monitoring for performance optimisation

Completed the installation during school holiday period to minimise educational disruption

Results

The modernised heating system has delivered transformative benefits to Airy Hill Primary School:

Significantly reduced carbon emissions through renewable heat pump technology

Lower energy costs through more efficient equipment and intelligent hybrid operation

Enhanced heating reliability with redundancy built into the system design

Improved temperature control creating better learning environments

Reduced maintenance requirements with modern, serviceable equipment

Valuable educational resource demonstrating renewable technology to pupils

This project exemplifies our expertise in educational facility heating modernisation, particularly our ability to implement innovative hybrid solutions that combine traditional and renewable technologies to deliver both immediate performance improvements and long-term sustainability benefits.
